Summer means holidays, beach, pool and long sunny days. But it’s also a time when we must take extra care of our vision. Exposure to sunlight, sand and chlorine can cause discomfort and even affect our eye health if we don’t take proper precautions.
At Màcula Visió, your optical centre in Barcelona, we share some essential tips to help you protect your eyes during the summer and enjoy safe, worry-free holidays.
1.Protect your eyes from the sun with the right sunglasses
Ultraviolet (UV) radiation can be very harmful to your eyes, even on cloudy days. Being exposed to the sun without proper visual protection can lead to issues such as conjunctivitis, photokeratitis, or, in the long term, cataracts and macular degeneration.
Tips to protect your eyes from the sun:
- Always wear sunglasses with 100% UV protection. Make sure they are CE certified.
- Choose wraparound styles or large frames that also shield the sides of your eyes.
- If you need vision correction, opt for prescription sunglasses or photochromic lenses.
At Màcula Visió, you’ll find a wide range of sunglasses for men, women and children, all with the proper filters to protect your vision.
2.Protect your eyes from sand
A gust of wind at the beach can blow sand into your eyes, causing irritation, redness or even injuries if not handled properly.
What to do if you get sand in your eyes:
- Don’t rub your eyes — you could damage the cornea.
- Rinse the eye with saline solution or clean, fresh water.
- If the discomfort persists, visit your trusted optician or ophthalmologist.
To prevent this, use sports sunglasses or wraparound styles that act as a barrier against sand and wind.
3.Avoid chlorine-related eye irritation
Pool chlorine is one of the main enemies of eye health in summer. There’s also risk when swimming in the sea or untreated water, where bacteria can cause infections.
Tips to protect your eyes from chlorine and water:
- Wear well-fitted swimming goggles, especially if you swim regularly.
- Avoid swimming with contact lenses. If you do, use daily disposables and throw them away after swimming.
- Rinse your eyes with saline solution or artificial tears after swimming.
4.Keep your eyes hydrated all summer long
Heat, air conditioning and sun exposure can lead to dry eyes, visual fatigue and general discomfort.
Tips to keep your eyes hydrated:
- Use preservative-free artificial tears if your eyes feel dry or irritated.
- Drink at least 1.5–2 litres of water a day.
- Blink frequently, especially when using screens — even on holiday.
